Biography

In my work I focus on the native birds that have been a constant presence in my life. In my yard, I am delighted by their interactions, movements, and the transformative effect of light on them. This fascination has made me appreciate why birds have been revered throughout Art History, Religion, and Folklore.

My paintings aim to blend scientific detail with symbolic depth, I focus on capturing the intricate structure, texture, and character of each species, and also present them at their most captivating—vibrant colors, flattering poses, and pristine feathers. My goal is not only to represent these birds with accuracy but also to highlight their innate beauty and charm. I hope to foster an appreciation for the unique species that inhabit our parks, cities, and yards. I want each piece to serve as an invitation to reconnect with the natural beauty that surrounds us every day.

I completed a Fine Arts degree in both Art and Art History at Oakland University and then taught at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After moving to Silver Spring, Maryland, I gained further experience working in an award-winning commercial art studio before founding The Roving Hare. Today, I continue to explore the region with my family and paint the native species we encounter.
